Bigger Problems

Near the corner of a farm field, the two researchers slogged through the mud to where a portion of the ground had been roped off with yellow police tape. Looking at the thing inside the area the taller of them said, "What is that?" "I suspect, George, that it is exactly what it looks like." "Frank, it looks like the abdominal section of a giant wasp."

Upon closer inspection, the theory was strengthened. "The stinger seems intact. It is extended as if it were being used when the creature died.", George said. Frank nodded and said, "The abdomen is hollowed out. Do those marks at the waist end suggest anything to you?" "I'm not sure yet, Frank. Let's see if we can find the rest of it."

An hour later, after struggling through the mud and rain, they had mapped out the locations of the remaining body parts that had been strewn across the open field. Frank was holding a clipboard on which he had been taking the horrible inventory. Four of the six legs had been found. A portion of the lower left mandible. Part of the right eye and the right antenna. Various chunks of the head casing. No trace of the thorax or wings. George and Frank compared notes. If the creature were reassembled, it would be at nearly 3 meters in length not counting the antennae. All of the parts bore the signs of being ripped from the body.

"I'm scared.", Frank said, trembling. The cold and damp were getting to the both of them. George wiped his nose and replied, "I'd be scared of one of these things too. It was huge. Where there is one, there has to be more. We are going to have to find the nest."

Frank was bone white. His eyes were wide, wild and vacant. His hands were shaking badly. "Oh yea!. Let's go hunting for a nest full of these things! I'm ready for 'em. They should be no trouble at all! Relatively easy." "Frank, you can't let this get to you.", George said. "You have to pull yourself together. These wasps are going to be a big problem."

"Pull yourself together he says. Big problem he says.", Frank said. He was nearly hysterical. "Good God, George! We have a much bigger problem than wasps!" George shook his head, "What could be a bigger problem than these things?"

"Look at the pieces!", Frank shouted. "The sucked dry, torn apart pieces. Those are teeth marks on the edges of the pieces, George." Frank seemed to calm a bit. Then he dropped his clipboard and grabbed George by the collar with both hands. He pulled George's face right up to his and said, "I am not afraid of a single ten foot wasp. I'm not even afraid of a whole nest of them. I'm afraid of whatever killed this one and ate it!"
